Rachel Cantor Advances At ITA Northeast Regionals
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University freshman women's tennis player Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) defeated Fairfield's Kristen Liu, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the ITA Northeast Regional Singles Round of 64, Saturday afternoon at Yale University's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. With the win, Cantor joins teammate Mary Wilson (Greensburg, Pa.), who received a first-round bye, in the Round of 64.
In other singles action, Adrienne Markison (Princeton, N.J.) fell to Brown's Marisa Schonfeld, 6-3, 6-1, in the Round of 128.
A pair of Quinnipiac doubles teams also played Saturday. Wilson and Cantor fell to Harvard's fifth-seeded duo of Holly Cao and Kristin Norton, 8-5, in the Round of 64. Following a first-round bye, Markison and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) also fell by the same 8-5 margin in the Round of 32 to another ranked Harvard duo, Samantha Rosenkrans and Hideko Tachibana, the ninth-seeded tandem in the tournament.
Cantor and Wilson continue ITA Northeast Regional singles play Sunday. Cantor's Round of 64 match against Brown's Bianca Aboubakare is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wilson will play the winner of tonight's match between Brown's Misia Krasowski and Boston University's Jessi Linero at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
