HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University women's tennis sophomore Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) has been named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week, the league office today announced. The award is the second of the year for Cantor, and the third of her career.
Cantor went 2-1 in singles this week, including a straight-sets victory against last week's NEC Player of the Week, Fairleigh Dickinson's Elmine Botes. Cantor defeated Botes for the second straight season with a 6-3, 7-5, decision in this year's contest. Cantor also defeated Fairfield's Sharissa Ryan, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9), at top singles. Her lone singles loss came to Stony Brook's Nini Lagvilava, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, Cantor began the week by pairing with Adrienne Markison (Princeton, N.J.) with an 8-5 victory over Alyssa Ruiz and Victoria Pirrello at No. 2. The duo then fell at No. 2 to FDU's Egzona Morina and Julia Prantl, 8-1, and at No. 1 to Stony Brook's Prerana Appineni and Aylin Mehter, 9-7.
The Bobcats return to action Friday, when they travel to
Fairfield, Conn., to take on intrastate NEC foe Sacred Heart. First
serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
