VILLANOVA, Pa. - Five Quinnipiac women's tennis players earned double wins as the Bobcats defeated Villanova, 6-1, in a final non-conference tune-up prior to the Northeast Conference Tournament Monday afternoon. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 11-8, while Villanova falls to 4-12.
Juliet Labarthe (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) combined at No. 1 doubles to defeat Mikelle Mancini and Kristin Gobberg, 8-5. Labarthe then defeated Alexandra Harding, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles, while Viebrock cruised past Anne Cognetti, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4. The wins pushed Labarthe to 42 victories for the season (22 singles, 20 doubles), passing Mary Wilson '10 for the Quinnipiac Division I freshman record (40).
Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Adrienne Markison (Princeton, N.J.) defeated Allison Solberg and Harding, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles. Cantor then won her No. 1 singles match against Mancini, 7-6 (12-10), 6-3. Markison was defeated by Solberg, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 singles for the Wildcats' lone point.
Lisanne Steinert (Glauchau, Germany) and Lavinia Cristescu (West Hartford, Conn.) paired on an 8-6 victory against Cognetti and Wesleigh Donadio at No. 3 doubles. Steinert then beat Gobberg, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 singles, while Cristescu outlasted Donadio, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), at No. 6.
The Bobcats return to action Friday, when they begin the NEC Tournament against the winner of the opening-round match between No. 8 Saint Francis (Pa.) and No. 9 Wagner. First serve will take place after 4:30 p.m. at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.
