HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team knocked-off all three opponents it faced in doubles play to secure three of four final spots at the Quinnipiac Invitational. In addition, the Bobcats used a 13-5 mark in singles' play to grab five of the final 16 spots in the tournament.
In doubles action, Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) and Juliet Labarthe (Oklahoma City, Ok.) turned away Seton Hall, 8-2, to advance to the finals of the Doubles "A" Flight. Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) also won their semifinal match-up, 8-0 against Seton Hall, to advance to the finals, securing a win in the "A" Flight for the Bobcats.
In the "B" Flight, Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) defeated Seton Hall, 8-6, to advance to the finals in that flight.
In singles play, Labarthe advanced to the semifinals of the "A" Flight with wins against Sacred Heart and Army and will face Hartford on Sunday. Cantor had the bye in the first round before losing, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals. In the "B" Flight, both Raynor and Viebrock advanced to the semifinals. Raynor had the first-round bye before defeating her opponent from Sacred Heart, 6-1, 6-0, to move on. Viebrock won her first-round match-up, 6-1, 6-0 before advancing to the semi's.
In the "C" Flight, Launie and Dassa both won two matches apiece to move on the semifinals. Launie was dominant, winning 6-1, 6-0 against her opponent from Fairfield before blanking her next opponent, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the semi's. Dassa also beat her first-round opponent from Fairfield, 6-3-62, before defeating her quarterfinal opponent from Seton Hall, 5-7, 6-2, 10-8, to move on.
In the singles consolation tournament, Lavinia Cristescu (West Hartford, Conn.) defeated opponents from UConn and Fairfield to win the Flight "C" Singles bracket.
The Bobcats will finish the week up tomorrow with the final day of the Quinnipiac Invitational on the Mt. Carmel campus of Quinnipiac University at 9 a.m.
