Cantor, Raynor, Dassa Advance To Quarterfinals At NJIT Invitational
NEWARK, N.J. – Senior Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and sophomores Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) will continue playing tomorrow morning, as the trio led the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team on day two of the NJIT Invitational at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility Indoor Tennis Courts in Newark, N.J.
Day two opened with the final round of the doubles tournament, where Cantor and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) took the courts for the Bobcats. Cantor and Viebrock defeated NJIT's Monika Graff and Hannelore MacDonald, 8-6, in the semifinals, but then saw their run come to an end in the championship. The twosome fell short to NJIT's Ksenia Kuzmenko and Jana Luste, 8-5.
Quinnipiac bounced back in singles play, advancing three members to the quarterfinals. In the bottom half of the bracket, Raynor and Dassa each defeated a pair of opponents to advance. Raynor topped NJIT's Megan Guidry, 8-2, in the second round, and then Sacred Heart's Nicole Rydzewski, 6-2, 6-4, in the third round. Dassa matched Raynor's performance by defeating St. Peter's Adina Halagian, 8-5, in the second round, and then defeated NJIT's Hannelore MacDonald, 6-1, 6-0, in the third round. Raynor will face Jana Luste and Dassa will take on NJIT's Ksenia Kuzmenko tomorrow morning in the quarterfinals.
In the top half of the bracket, Cantor prevailed as the lone Bobcat to remain in the field. She defeated St. Peter's Ivana Grbelja, 8-0, in the second round, and then topped NJIT's Natalia Melibeu, 6-3, 6-1, in the third round. She will face Fairfield's Sharissa Ryan tomorrow morning in the quarterfinals.
Viebrock and Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) also picked up victories this afternoon. Viebrock won in the second round of the main draw before being ousted in the third round, while Chupa advanced in consolation play and will play again tomorrow.
The NJIT Invitational continues tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
