WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team competed in the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon, an annual championship hosted by Army at the ITA Regionals at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete at one of the 87 USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country.
In search of advancing to the Main Singles bracket, sophomore Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) opened competition for the Bobcats in the regional qualifying round. Unfortunately, Raynor suffered an early exit with a three-set loss to Army's Jamila Paul, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round.
Quinnipiac then featured two groups in the Main Doubles Draw, where Raynor and fellow classmate Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and seniors Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) took on two formidable opponents. Raynor and Dassa suffered an 8-1 loss to Princeton's Lindsay Graff and Amanda Mulliawan, while Cantor and Viebrock fell short to Rutgers' Noor Judeh and Lindsay Kayati, 8-3.
The 2012 ITA Regionals continue tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. where the Bobcats will compete in the back draws.
