WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team resumed action on Sunday afternoon, as the Bobcats opened the 2013 season on a high note with a 6-1 victory over Albany at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. Five Bobcats collected multiple wins in the match, leading Quinnipiac to its second win of the campaign.
"It's always great to pick up a win when you return from such a long layoff," said Head Coach Mike Quitko, who earned his 488th career victory. "We have three matches in February, which will help us get fit for March and April. We want to peak physically and mentally just in time for the NEC Championships."
Quinnipiac began the afternoon by taking an early lead with the doubles decision. The senior duo of Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) earned their 35th career win when playing together, defeating Rocio Lopez and Sarah Iannone, 8-6, at No. 1. Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) and Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) suffered a tough defeat to Mireille Hermans and Cathryn Crummey, 8-6, at No. 2; but Erin Suvar (North Massapequa, N.Y.) and Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) won by default at No. 3 to earn the doubles tally.
Singles featured much of the same for Quinnipiac, as the Bobcat claimed five out of the six available points. Viebrock topped Hermans, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 10-3, at No. 2; Dassa defeated Crummey, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3; Chupa knocked off Iannone, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4; and Launie cruised past Fran White, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5. Suvar collected the sixth and final point by default.
The Bobcats resume competition on February 24th with a non-conference match against UMass. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m. at Bay Road Club in Amherst, Mass.
