Strong Showing for Women’s Tennis in Loss to Southern Illinois Carbondale

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team put forth a valiant effort in its second match of their 2013 spring break trip, falling short to one of the nation's better teams in Southern Illinois Carbondale, 7-0, in Orlando, Fla.

With the loss, Quinnipiac fell back to the .500 mark, descending to 4-4 on the season. Recently ranked one of the nation's top 60 teams, the streaking Salukis collected their seventh straight win and improved to 8-1 on the season.

The Bobcats looked to set the tone early on, holding their own in the doubles segment. Sophomores Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) nearly upended Jennifer Dien and Natasha Tomishima at No. 2, but suffered a heartbreaking defeat, 9-8 (2). Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) kept things close in an 8-6 loss with Anastacia Simons and Melanie Delsart at No. 1, and Southern Illinois sealed the sweep with an 8-2 win at No. 3.

Quinnipiac looked to bounce back in the singles portion of the match, led by Dassa and Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.). Dassa and Chupa went the distance in their match-ups but came up short in the final set. Dassa lost to Dien, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7, at No. 4 and Chupa was defeated by Ariadna Cairo Baza, 6-4, 2-6, 10-5, at No. 5. In the other match-ups, Cantor fell to Delsart, 6-1, 7-6 (7); Raynor was defeated by Tomishima, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 2; Viebrock lost to Lee, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 3; and Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) was defeated by Gisela Cairo Baza, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6.
