HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) of the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team was recently named the Northeast Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, announced on Tuesday, April 16, 2013. Cantor was perfect on the week, recording a 6-0 mark en route to a 2-1 weekly record for the Bobcats.
Cantor is peaking at the right time for the Bobcats, who head into the postseason as the #2 seed in the NEC Tournament. The Short Hills, N.J. native won all three of her #1 singles matches last week, highlighted by a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win last Tuesday over Providence ace Marisela Aviles-Duron, who has racked up 75 career singles victories for the Friars. She also bested Saint Francis U's Rafaela Panizza and Hofstra's Sarah Bowen in straight sets in weekend play. In doubles, Cantor teamed up with Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) to go a perfect 3-0 in #1 flight action.
Cantor has lifted her career singles and doubles win total to 129, good for 10th in QU history. She is seventh in Division I career wins; fourth in Division I career doubles wins; and 12th in Division I career singles wins.
Quinnipiac is back in action Friday, April 19 with the 2013 Northeast Conference Tournament. The Bobcats will take on either #7 Mount St. Mary's or #10 Wagner College in the quarterfinals at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.
