Women’s Tennis Defeats Mount St. Mary's, 4-0, to Advance to NEC Semifinals

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team continued its dominance in the Northeast Conference Tournament on Friday morning, as the Bobcats defeated Mount St. Mary's, 4-0, to advance to the semifinals of the single-elimination playoff. With the win, Quinnipiac has progressed into the last four for the 15th straight year.
"We were sharp," said head coach Mike Quitko, who picked up his 504th career win. "It's win or go home at this point, so we needed to be at our best today. It was a solid all-around effort - from top to bottom - which is great for our confidence as we head into the semifinals to take on a talented squad from LIU Brooklyn."
Quinnipiac, now 11-8 overall, won its third straight match and fourth in its last six tries. A large part of the Bobcats success this season has come via doubles, and Friday morning wasn't any different. QU collected the first point of the match, claiming wins at No. 1 and No. 2 for the 1-0 lead. Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) defeated Kelly Conroy and Samantha Pinchoff, 8-3, at in the first flight, while Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) topped Renee Deane and Carly Landini, 8-4, at No. 2. Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) and Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) were also leading in the third flight before the Bobcats clinched the point.
In singles, it was a race to see who could earn the next three points for Quinnipiac. Raynor, Viebrock and Chupa each picked up wins in their respective flights, winning in straight sets to solidify a 4-0 win. Raynor defeated Pinchoff, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2; Viebrock defeated Deane, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3; and Chupa knocked off Liz Rossi, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5. Quinnipiac was leading in each of the other three flights.

In the other bottom-half quarterfinal, No. 3 LIU Brooklyn defeated No. 6 Saint Francis University, 4-0, setting up a 2010 NEC Semifinal rematch between the Blackbirds and the Bobcats. LIU defeated QU, 4-1, in that showdown. First serve is set for tomorrow, Saturday, April 20, at 9 a.m.
