Chupa and Dzulynsky Shine on Final Day of Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Fla.) each advanced to the final match of their respective flights on Sunday morning as the Bobcats women's tennis team wrapped up competition at the 17th annual Quinnipiac University Invitational at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts.

"I'm very proud of how hard we worked all weekend," said head coach Mike Quitko, who has been here for all 17 of Quinnipiac's Invites. ""Every time we get out there, we are playing a little bit better. Right now it's important for us to stay healthy and get fit in preparation for the Spring season. If we stay healthy, we're going to be tough to beat."

Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Fla.) was the first Bobcat to advance to a flight championship, when she defeated Sacred Heart's Katie DeRienzo, in the bottom half of Flight A. The Miramar, Fla. native worked quickly and effectively in a straight-set, 6-0, 7-6 (6) victory in the semifinals. Unfortunately, Dzulynsky's run would come to an end in the championship match, yielding a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 loss to UConn's ace, Srna Stosljevic.

Quinnipiac's captain, Mary Chupa, was the second Bobcat to advance to a flight final after cruising past UConn's Jennifer Learmonth bottom half of Flight C. However, Chupa saw her quest for a third QU Invite title cut short with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to UConn's Natalie Robson. Nonetheless, Chupa's weekend was a successful one after partnering with Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) to win the Flight B Doubles title on Saturday morning (9/14).

Oliphant served as the third Bobcat to partake in the semifinals, and nearly became the third QU player to advance to the finals. However, Robson proved to be too much and escaped with a 6-1, 7-6 (5) victory for a spot in the last match. Robson defeated three Quinnipiac players en route to the bracket win.

The Bobcats are back in action at the Army Invitational, a three-day event set to begin on Friday, September 27, 2013. Quinnipiac joins a field consisting of Sacred Heart, UConn, Stony Brook, Fordham, Marist, Fairleigh Dickinson, Seton Hall, St. John's, NJIT, Albany, Illinois, LIU Brooklyn, Bryant, St. Bonaventure, Binghamton, Rutgers and the hosting Knights. First serve is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y.
