WEST POINT, N.Y. – Junior Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and sophomore Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Fla.) won Flight A Doubles on Sunday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team concluded play at the 2013 Army Invitational in West Point, N.Y. Freshman Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) also took part in an event finals after advancing to the championship match of Flight C Singles.
"Our team continues to play well early on in the 2013-14 season," said head coach Mike Quitko. "Jackie and Sophia added another doubles title and Sydney was fantastic in a difficult bracket that featured a very talented field. We will look to carry our momentum into our first dual match of the season against UConn this week."
Raynor and Dzulynsky completed a perfect 4-0 weekend with an 8-4 win in the championship match. The Bobcat tandem defeated the Taylor sisters from Army, Elle and Della, to improve to 7-3 when paired together this season. Raynor and Dzulynsky have two flight titles thus far after winning Flight A of the SHU Doubles Festival earlier this month.
In addition to doubles, Quinnipiac also featured a pair of athletes in Main Draw Singles as well. Young and Dzulynsky continued their stellar play and gave themselves a chance to win their respective flights. Young earned a spot in the championship match after defeating Masha Krachok of Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 in the bottom half of the semifinals. Unfortunately, Young's run came to an end when she met Stony Brook's Nadia Smergut in the last match, falling short in a third set tie-breaker, 3-6, 6-2, 10-3. Dzulynsky was eliminated by Seton Hall's Hannah Liljkevist, 6-1, 6-3, in the bottom half of the Flight A semifinals.
The Bobcats are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 2 with their first dual match of the 2013-14 season. Quinnipiac welcomes longstanding rival UConn to the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Mount Carmel Campus. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
