MEDIA, Pa. – With the match hanging in the balance, Rachel Horton (Stamford, Conn.) came through when it mattered most for the Quinnipiac women's tennis team. Horton clinched the deciding point in Friday night's non-conference match to lift the Bobcats over Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's at the Springton Tennis Club in Media, Pa.
With her match all square at one-set apiece and the match all square at 3-3, Horton buckled down in the final set and prevailed for the Bobcats. After falling 3-6 in the first set, Horton overcame the odds and defeated Devi Jadeja 6-1 and 7-5 to earn the point at No. 3 singles. Quinnipiac had earned three points prior to the deciding marker.
"Anytime you go against an opponent from the Atlantic 10, you know you're in for a good match," said head coach Mike Quitko. "I'm very proud of the way we handled ourselves late in the match. We kept focus, stuck to the game plan and defeated a very good tennis team. Rachel was tremendous in the deciding point."
As it does so often, Quinnipiac, now 2-3 on the season, began the night by earning the doubles point in the match. Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) defeated Kristina Eisenbrand and Kelly Mulquin, 8-2, at No. 2; and Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Fla.) and Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) defeated Jadeja and Anne Marie Devlin, 8-3, at No. 3. Horton and Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) went unfinished at No. 1.
In the singles segment of the match, Quinnipiac picked up wins at No. 2, 3 and 5. Raynor picked up career win No. 96 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Eisenbrand at No. 2; Dassa collected career win No. 74 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Alex Zachem at No. 5; and Horton clinched the match at No. 3.
