ELKTON, Md. – After a close, back-and-forth match at doubles, the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team dropped four points at singles to finalize a 5-2 victory for Delaware on Saturday at the Elkton Indoor Tennis Center in Maryland.
"We played very good in doubles as a team," said QU head coach Mike Quitko. "In singles we played well in a few spots. You have to be in every match though to not allow the momentum to shift."
Delaware took the doubles point to begin the match after winning on courts one and three. Dorothy Safron and Carmen Lai defeated Rachel Horton (Stamford, Conn.) and Sydney Young (Austin, Texas), 8-1, at No. 1. Kim Milla and Danea Jonjic' secured the doubles point after grinding out a close 8-7 (5) win over Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Fla.) and Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.).
Quinnipiac did manage to take court two when Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) scored an 8-1 victory over Nataliya Naumova and Olivia Heim, 8-1. Raynor and Dassa improved to 44-16 when playing together, while Raynor inched closer to career No. 100 and remains just three wins shy of the milestone.
In the singles segment, Quinnipiac escaped with victories on courts one and five. Dzulynsky knocked off Jonjic' with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 1; and Dassa earned her second win of the night with a 6-1, 6-4 result over Olivia Heim. Dassa collected her 75th and 76th career wins in the match.
