FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team clinched the 2014 MAAC Regular-Season Title on Tuesday evening, as the Bobcats completed a perfect season in conference play with a 4-0 win over Manhattan College at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Quinnipiac will serve as the top overall seed in the upcoming MAAC Tournament Championship next weekend.
In its first season as a member of the MAAC, Quinnipiac ran away with the title surrendering just five total points en route to an 8-0 record. Quinnipiac also became the first undefeated team since Fairfield did it back in 2011-12. The Bobcats defeated the Stags, 4-3, in that season.
Quinnipiac needed the win on Tuesday to secure the title outright, as Fairfield's loss to Quinnipiac was its only setback of the season. Fairfield holds the second seed of the tournament, while Niagara and Marist round out the field of four teams. Quinnipiac and fourth-seeded Marist will meet in one leg of the semifinals on Saturday, April 26 at 2 p.m. at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.
Quinnipiac (11-10), who climbed over the .500 mark for the first time all season, won at No. 2, 3, 4, and 5 singles to secure the victory. With rain in the forecast, the two teams played singles first to avoid having to reschedule. Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.), Sydney Young (Austin, Texas), Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) and Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) each added a win to their collegiate resume. It was No. 117 for Raynor, No. 38 for Young, No. 39 for Oliphant, and No. 91 for Chupa.
