HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team is headed back to the NCAA Tournament. The Bobcats drew nationally-ranked No. 9 Stanford University (16-2, 8-2 PAC 12) and will head across the country for the first round on Friday, May 9, 2014 – hosted by the Cardinal at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Stanford was awarded the No. 11 overall seed in the postseason draw and will host the four-team bracket for the weekend. Tulsa and Long Beach State will meet in the first match at 11 a.m., followed by Stanford and Quinnipiac at 2 p.m. The winners of the two matches will square off in the second round on Saturday, May 10 at 1 p.m.
The Bobcats are coming off of their seventh Division I Conference Championship after defeating Fairfield by a score of 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. Quinnipiac captured the MAAC's automatic bid and will make its first appearance to the big dance since 2011. Nothing new for the Bobcats, Quinnipiac has made the trek out to Stanford in two of its seven NCAA appearances. QU has faced UCLA (2011), the University of Georgia (2005), UCLA (2007) and Miami (Fla.) (2008) in its other NCAA tournament bids.
It was another impressive season for Stanford, which was the nation's last remaining undefeated team at 13-0 before suffering a 4-3 home loss to UCLA on April 4. The loss was Stanford's first in nearly a year dating back to last season, when the Cardinal won its final six matches en route to capturing its 18th national championship (17 NCAA, 1 AIAW).
All seats are general admission. Single-day tickets are $8 (adult) and $5 (student/youth/senior). Tickets are available starting on Wednesday, April 30, either in person, by calling 1-800-STANFORD or visiting www.gostanford.com. Phone orders will be available at will call.
All first and second round matches are played at campus sites. The final 16 teams square off at the NCAA Tennis Championships, hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., beginning Thursday, May 15. The national championship matches are set for Tuesday, May 20.
