Women's Indoor Track And Field Set For NEC Championships This Weekend
LANDOVER, Md. – The Quinnipiac University women’s indoor track and field team will compete at the 2012 Northeast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend. The meet will take place on Saturday and Sunday, February 11-12, at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
“All the girls are coming together at the right time,” said Head Coach Carolyn Martin. “We’re looking forward to seeing everyone set personal records and season bests at the NEC’s. It should be an exciting weekend of racing.”
The Bobcats, who were picked to finish ninth in the NEC Preseason Poll, will participate in several events over the course of the weekend and look to compete in the finals of each on Sunday.
Quinnipiac veterans Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Becca White (Natick, Mass.) look to take the title in the 3,000-meters this weekend. Roche, a senior, paced the Bobcats in the 3k with a time of 9:53.85 at the Terrier Invitational in late January, while junior White ran a personal-best 9:51.96 to win the 3,000-meter run at the Yale Invitational on Jan. 14.
White will also run in the 5,000-meters, alongside sophomores Amanda and Brianna Faust (Macungie, Pa.). Several Bobcats look to make an impression in the one mile, including sophomore Jessica Soja (Simsbury, Conn.) and junior Jill Humphreys (Burlington, Mass.). Soja recently won the 1,000-meter run in 3:02.04 at the Dartmouth Indoor Classic on Feb. 4.
Additionally, three Bobcats will represent Quinnipiac in the 800-meters, including senior Rachel Morelli (Philadelphia, Pa.), junior Rebecca Smith (Hamburg, N.J.), and freshman Rebecca Stabile (Haverhill, Mass.). Stabile picked up her first NEC Rookie of the Week accolade after almost setting a new Quinnipiac record in the 800-meter race at Boston University’s Terrier Invitational on Jan. 27. The rookie moved into the top spot amongst conference freshmen as she crossed the finish line in 19th place in 2:16.27.
Quinnipiac also hopes for a great performance in the distance medley relay (DMR), an event where the Bobcats qualified for the upcoming ECAC Championships after placing fourth in 12:03.92 at the Yale Giegengack Invitational on Feb. 3.
Women’s events will start at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 and 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12. Please refer to the official website of Quinnipiac Athletics, www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com, for results after the conclusion of each day.
