Women's Indoor Track Runs In First Day Of NEC Championships

LANDOVER, Md. – The Quinnipiac University women's indoor track and field team competed in the first day of the 2012 Northeast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

"We're off to a much better start than last year," said Head Coach Carolyn Martin. "We're excited to have few people advance to the finals and we can't wait to see how tomorrow's going to go."

After four events scored, the Bobcats find themselves in seventh place with eight points, while Sacred Heart leads the team rankings with 43.50 points.

Sophomore Jessica Soja (Simsbury, Conn.) will represent the Bobcats in Sunday's one-mile finals, after placing second in her heat and fourth overall with a time of 5:09.38 in today's preliminaries.

Freshman Rebecca Stabile (Haverhill, Mass.) also qualified for tomorrow's finals after finishing sixth amongst 37 runners in the 800-meter prelims. Stabile placed second in her heat at 2:19.30.

The Bobcats earned their eight points on the day as the team saw two runners place in the finals of the 3,000-meter run. Junior Becca White (Natick, Mass.) finished fourth in 9:55.75, while senior Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) placed sixth overall with a time of 10:03.95.

Additionally, freshman Nikki Smith (Tewksbury, Mass.) broke a Quinnipiac record in the 60-meter dash, while fellow rookie Katy Petrie (Cranston, R.I.) paced the Bobcats in the 500-meters with a time of 1:24.26.

Quinnipiac will compete in several events in the last day of the NEC Championships on Sunday, Feb. 12, with the women's events starting at 11 a.m. The Bobcats will be represented in the distance medley relay (DMR), the 5,000-meter run, 4x400-meter relay, and the high jump, as the second day of NEC action continues.
