Women's Outdoor Track In Eighth After Day One of NEC Championships
Emmitsburg, Md. - The Quinnipiac University women's outdoor track team sits eighth of 12 teams after one day at the 2010 Northeast Conference Championships hosted by Mount St. Mary's. The Bobcats have 10 points through one day of competition, while Sacred Heart is currently first with 59 points and Monmouth is second with 48. There were six scored events on Saturday with Quinnipiac competing in just two, as the other four were field events.
"We had a pretty good day," Head Coach Carolyn Martin said. "We look forward to running in the finals tomorrow as well as picking up some more points in other events."
Senior Lindsey Pierret (Morristown, N.J.) finished fourth in the 10,000-meter race. Pierret's time of 39:29.70 was 22 seconds better than Sacred Heart's Samantha Troy, who finished fifth in the event.
In the 1,500 meters, two Quinnipiac runners advanced to Sunday's final. Freshman Becca White (Natick, Mass.) and sophomore Katie Beam (South Windsor, Conn.) will run in the finals of the event Sunday after White won her heat in 4:56.91, while Beam was third in another heat, crossing the line in 4:52.91.
Senior Nicole Payne (Rye Brook, N.Y.) posted a time of 1:03.41 in the 400 meters. Sophomore Hannah Donadio (Killingworth, Conn.) was the team's top finisher in the 800-meter race, crossing the line in 2:20.40.
Quinnipiac's 4x800-meter relay team finished fourth of 12 teams on Saturday. The grouping of White, Donadio, Jeana Favat (Gibbsboro, N.J.) and Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) posted a time of 9:39.01. Roche was her team's final runner and nearly pulled the Bobcats into third place, but finished less than a second back of Jennifer Haffner of Saint Francis (PA).
Favat also posted a strong showing in the 400-meter hurdles. The junior harrier was fourth in her heat with a time of 1:08.49.
The Bobcats return to action Sunday in four events. Roche, Beam and Pierret will join with Kristen Stevens (Succasunna, N.J.), Jill Humphreys (Burlington, Conn.) and Abbey Airoldi (South Royalton, Vt.) to make up the six runners representing Quinnipiac in the 5,000-meter race. The Bobcats will also run in the steeplechase, the 4x400 meters and the finals of the 1,500 meters.
