EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Quinnipiac University women's outdoor track team ran in the first day of competition at the 2012 Northeast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 5, which are hosted by Mount St. Mary's University. After day one of events, the Bobcats rank ninth out of 11 schools with seven points, while Sacred Heart leads the tournament with 70 points.
"I was really happy with the way people battled today," said Head Coach Carolyn Martin. "I think everyone who raced took something away from the day and learned something about themselves as runners. I'm really looking forward to see how tomorrow plays out after seeing some great performances.
In the first event of the day, senior Martha Santandreu (Hamburg, N.Y.) paced the Bobcats in the finals of the 10,000-meter run with an eighth place finish. Santandreu earned QU one point as she crossed the finish line in 39:40.34. Sophomore Amanda Faust (Macungie, Pa.) followed in ninth with a time of 39:51.62, while sophomore Kelly Malloy (Sewell, N.J.) finished 11th at 41:01.67.
Quinnipiac saw five runners compete in the 1,500-meter run trials, including sophomore Jessica Soja, who paced the Bobcats with a ninth-place finish. Soja's time of 4:45.65 qualified for tomorrow's finals. QU senior Rachel Morelli followed in 15th place in 4:55.83, while fellow classmate Katie Beam placed 17th at 4:59.06.
The Bobcats also combined for a third-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay as the team finished in 9:19.71. Senior Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.), junior Becca White (Natick, Mass.), freshman Rebecca Stabile (Haverhill, Mass.), and Soja each represented Quinnipiac in the event.
Stabile came close to qualifying in the 400-meter hurdles as she placed ninth in 1:04.34, while her sister Samantha Stabile (Haverhill, Mass.) participated in several events, including the 100-meter dash, where she finished 12th in 12.86. Samantha also paced Quinnipiac in the 200-meter dash, placing 20th with a time of 26.43.
The Bobcats will compete in the final day of the Championships tomorrow, on Sunday, May 6 when the team races in the steeplechase, 5k, 4x400-meter relay and finals of the 1,500-meter run.
