Roche Wins Steeplechase In Final Day Of NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships
EMMITSBURG, Md. – Senior Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) won the 3000-meter steeplechase as the Quinnipiac University women's outdoor track and field team competed in the final day of the 2012 Northeast Conference Championships on Sunday, May 6. After two days of competition, the Bobcats finished in ninth place overall with 28.25 points, while Monmouth University won the Championships with 159.25 points.
Roche took the title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as she finished the event in 10:58.29, a new meet record at the NEC Outdoor Championships. Fellow senior Julie Lanning (Victor, N.Y.) also placed for the Bobcats in the event with a seventh-place finish at 11:19.79.
Junior Becca White (Natick, Mass.) paced Quinnipiac in the 5K as she placed second with a time of 17:07.99, also a qualifying time for the ECACs. The Bobcats also saw two additional runners finish the 5,000-meter run in the top-20, including sophomore Brianna Faust (Macungie, Pa.) in 18:37.34 and senior Katie Beam (South Windsor, Conn.) in 18:47.40.
Quinnipiac's Samantha Stabile (Haverhill, Mass.) became the first Bobcat to earn points in a field event as she finished the high jump in a four-way tie, posting 1.50 meters. In the finals of the 1,500-meters, sophomore Jessica Soja (Simsbury, Conn.) represented the Bobcats as she placed eighth overall in 4:48.74.
"I thought we had some great races today," said Head Coach Carolyn Martin. "Although we would have liked to get some more points this season, the team performed to the best of their abilities and I couldn't have asked for much more. I was really happy for the ladies who ended their season with such strong performances."
The Bobcats return to action at the New England Championships and ECACs next weekend, May 10-13.
