WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Quinnipiac women's outdoor track and field team fielded two relay teams to close out their run in the second day of action at the Colonial Relays hosted by the College of William & Mary. The Bobcats' distance medley relay team picked up a 6th place result on the afternoon out of 19 teams while the 4x800m relay team filled with Quinnipiac upperclassmen also took to the track to wrap up their second straight week of competition down in Virginia. With the 6th place result in the distance medley relay, the Bobcats earned 11 total points to pick up a 28th place result out of 40 competing programs. Quinnipiac placed first among the three MAAC teams in action as Marist took 32nd while Iona took 35th. Rutgers won the event with 111 total points.
The Bobcats' distance medley team on Saturday featured the foursome that currently holds the Quinnipiac track all-time record in sophomores Chelsea Savage (Pembroke, Mass.), Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, N.J.), Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Conn.) and junior Katy Petrie (Cranston, R.I.). On Saturday the dynamic grouping crossed the line in 11:58.38, just a little over 10 seconds behind their all-time record but still good enough for a 6th place result out of 19 teams. The 6th place finish represented the Bobcats' fifth Top 10 of the Colonial Relays, a significant feat considering the top-notch talent headlining this field (Rutgers and Villanova).
The only other relay team in action for Quinnipiac on the day was the 4x800m relay team filled with three graduate students and one senior as head coach Carolyn Martin relied on her veterans to guide their way through the last leg of competition on the weekend for the Bobcats. Graduate students Rachel Morelli (Philadelphia, Pa.), Jill Humphreys (Burlington, Mass.) and Christine Donnelly (Philadelphia, Pa.) as well as senior Val Zielinski (Hackettstown, N.J.) combined to finish the event in 9:37.34 to finish in 18th place out of 25 teams.
Quinnipiac will take the next week to prepare for a single day of action at the Rider Invitational, an important meet for the team as they will be running and competing at the site of the 2014 MAAC Championships from Lawrenceville, N.J. The Rider Invitational is slated for Saturday, April 12 with competition scheduled to last throughout the day.
