LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The 2014 MAAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship will be held this weekend, May 3-4, at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. This marks the first appearance in the MAAC Championship for the Quinnipiac women's outdoor track & field team as they look to build on the momentum established at last year's Northeast Conference Championship where the Bobcats totaled 46 points, their most in a championship meet since 2008.
The meet begins at 3:30 pm on Saturday with the hammer throw, javelin and long jump. Running events will start at 4:00 pm with the 4x800m relay. The 3000m steeplechase and the 10000m will also take place on Saturday. Admission to the meet on Saturday is free.
The bulk of the meet is on Sunday with a trip of field events starting at 11:00 am. At Noon, the 4x100m relay will kick off the day's running events. Admission on Sunday is $15 for adults and $5 for children and students with a valid ID. Tickets can be purchased on maac.ticketleap.com in the championship central link.
The MAAC will hold its annual awards banquet following the completion of the meet on Sunday. Video will be posted in the Awards Show channel on MAAC.TV.
Quinnipiac hopes to continue another great season that has them peaking at just the right time. Several Bobcats are coming off new career highs from the Yale Springtime Invitational while the distance medley relay team came through with a new program record at the Penn Relays last Thursday. Armed with 13 senior class members, this experienced Bobcat squad is ready to make one last run at their first title in program history.
The Bobcat contingent is led by a host of seniors and graduate students including Becca White (Natick, Mass.), Amanda, Brianna and Christina Faust (Macungie, Pa.), Rachel Morelli (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Jill Humphreys (Burlington, Mass.) who all tallied points with a Top 10 finish in their respective events in last year's conference championship.
One of the strongest events for the Bobcats all season has been the 400m as sophomore Nia Baker (Brooklyn, N.Y.), freshman Cori Reid (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and sophomore Kristen Ulrich (Clark, N.J.) are all capable of placing in the Top 10 in their preferred sprint event.
Just entering the fold late in the season was freshman Bonnie Pisciotta (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) who currently holds the outdoor program record in both the 100m (12.6 seconds) and 200m (25.7 seconds) as she just established the new 100m record last weekend at Yale.
Quinnipiac will also field competitors in the javelin throw for the first time in program history as Reid and sophomore Jennifer Mears (Vernon, Conn.) will both look to make some history as the first Bobcats to place at the conference championship in a throwing event in Quinnipiac history.
The Bobcats' head coach in her 5th season is Carolyn Martin and she is assisted by Steve Belanger, Wilton Wright and Christopher Dickerson. Martin has overseen a total transformation of the program that was once a threat in only the distance events to now a viable option in the sprint, middle distance and field events for the first time in program history.
