ORONO, Maine The Quinnipiac University volleyball team was defeated twice at the Maine Invitational, Saturday at Memorial Gym. The Bobcats first fell to host Maine, 3-0, before Providence defeated Quinnipiac by the same margin later in the day. Freshman Alyssa Naylor (San Diego, Calif.) led the Bobcats with 15 kills on the day, while senior Crista Valentino (Oakdale, N.Y.) tallied 16 of her 17 digs against Providence.
Naylor was named to the Maine Invitational All-Tournament Team after compiling 27 kills, a .442 hitting percentage and seven blocks in three matches during the weekend.
With the losses, the Bobcats dropped to 1-6 on the season, while the Black Bears (4-2) and Friars (4-4) each picked up their fourth victory. Freshman setter Kayla Lawler (Richmond, Ind.) totaled 44 assists on the day, including 31 against Providence.
The Black Bears controlled the match from the outset, taking the first two sets, each by a 25-10 margin. Maine completed the sweep with a 25-17 decision in the third set. While the Providence match also proved to be a sweep, the Bobcats kept each set close. After the Friars took the first stanza, 25-20, the Bobcats racked up 23 and 22 points, respectively, in the second and third sets.
Quinnipiac returns to action Tuesday, when they travel north to take on intrastate rival Hartford. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
