HAMDEN, Conn. Freshmen Kelby Carey (Surfside Colony, Calif.) and Stephanie Biediger (Houston, Texas) compiled double-doubles, but the Quinnipiac University volleyball team was defeated by Hartford in five sets, 3-2, in the final match of the Quinnipiac Bobcat Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Burt Kahn Court. The Hawks took the first and third sets, both by a 25-20 margin, before winning the decisive fifth set, 15-12. The Bobcats won a pair of close sets that went to extra points, 27-25 and 26-24, in the second and fourth sets. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 2-16, while the Hawks improve to 5-11.
Carey led the Bobcats with 12 kills, while Biediger added 10. Both Carey and Biediger had 12 digs. Senior Crista Valentino (Oakdale, N.Y.) had a season-high 21 digs, while freshman Kayla Lawler (Richmond, Ind.) added 32 assists. Senior Jenna Benigno (Milford, Conn.) contributed eight kills, 12 digs and two blocks. Freshmen Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) and Alyssa Naylor (San Diego, Calif.) had three and two blocks, respectively.
Naylor and Lawler were named to the Quinnipiac Bobcat Invitational All-Tournament Team for their efforts during the three-match, two-day event. Naylor had 16 kills, four blocks and hit .250 for the weekend, while Lawler had 77 assists, 17 digs and 11 kills.
The Bobcats return to action Friday, when they take part in the Chicago State Invitational. Quinnipiac will face Chicago State, Friday, before match-ups with Providence and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Saturday. The trip concludes with a Sunday match against Illinois-Chicago.
