Senior Kelby Carey (Surfside, Calif.) and freshman Tierra Allen (Sumter, S.C.) each totaled a team-high 13 kills to lead the Quinnipiac women's volleyball team to a 3-2 win against La Salle in front of a capacity crowd at Burt Kahn Court on the Mt. Carmel Campus of Quinnipiac University. With the victory, the Bobcats improve to 1-6, while La Salle falls to 2-8.
Kayla Lawler (Louisville, Ky.) recorded a team-high 41 assists for the Bobcats, while sophomore Tracy Wright (Fair Lawn, N.J.) contributed a season-high 18 digs. Freshman Krista Bennett (Scottsdale, Ariz.) added a career-high 13 digs, and Carey chipped in a season-high 12 digs.
The Bobcats fell in the first set, 25-16, before storming out to a 12-2 lead in the second set, eventually winning the set, 25-22. The Explorers took the third set, 25-21, before the Bobcats took the fourth set, 25-19, to force a fifth and deciding set.
In the fifth set, the Bobcats took a 9-5 lead, only to surrender the next four points, evening the score at nine. Neither team led by more than two points the rest of the way, trading tallies back and forth. The Explorers set up match point at 14-13, 15-14, and 18-17, but were unable to put the Bobcats away.
Quinnipiac capitalized the third time, as following a La Salle error to even the score at 18, Carey recorded the final two kills of the match courtesy of assists from senior Lawler, taking the fifth set, 20-18.
The Bobcats return to action with a pair of home matches on Saturday, as part of the Quinnipiac/University of Hartford Invitational at Burt Kahn Court. The Bobcats will host Navy at 11 a.m., followed by a match against Delaware State at 5 p.m.
