HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior setter Kayla Lawler (Richmond, Ind.) dished out a team-high 20 assists on Sunday afternoon, but the Quinnipiac University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21 and 25-13) decision to Long Island University at Burt Kahn Court. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 2-15 on the season and 1-3 in the Northeast Conference. The Blackbirds collected their fourth consecutive triumph and improved to 9-10 overall, 4-1 in the league.

The first set featured a quick start from the visitors, as LIU raced out to an 8-2 advantage. The Blackbirds then extended their lead to 15-7 and cruised to a 25-15 victory in the opening stanza. Senior Kelby Carey (Surfside Colony, Calif.) led the attack for the Bobcats, as the senior recorded a team-high three kills on 10 attempts in the frame.  

In the second and most competitive set of the match, the Bobcats jumped out to an early 7-5 advantage. However, after exchanging a few points, the Blackbirds mustered an 8-1 run to take a 17-10 lead. Freshman Brittanie Robinson posted a team-high four kills and three digs in the set for Quinnipiac, but the Bobcats dropped a four-point decision by the final score of 25-21.

In the third and final set of the contest, Long Island opened with a 7-1 run and never looked back. The Blackbirds attacked at a set-high .320 clip and recorded 11 kills en route to a 25-13 victory. Lawler posted six assists and three digs to lead the way for the Bobcats.

Sophomore Olivia Grattan, Carey and Lawler paced the Bobcats' offense on the afternoon. Grattan posted six kills and two errors on 14 attempts, Carey added six kills on 28 attacks and Lawler registered seven digs to go along with her 20 assists. Sophomore Tracy Wright finished a team-high 10 digs to lead the back row.

The Bobcats return to action with a pair of games next weekend. On Saturday, October 9th the team travels to Fairleigh Dickinson, followed by a trip to Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon. Both matches will begin at 1 p.m.
