Women's Volleyball Defeated By Robert Morris, 3-1, In NEC Action
HAMDEN, Conn. – Freshman Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) led the Quinnipiac University women's volleyball team with a team-high 11 kills on Sunday afternoon, but the Bobcats fell in four sets (28-30, 12-25, 25-22 and 12-25) to Robert Morris University at Burt Kahn Court.
With the loss, the Bobcats dropped to 3-18 on the season and 2-6 in Northeast Conference competition. The Colonials, now winners in eight of their last 11 matches, improved to 11-12, 6-2 in the league.
In the first and most exciting game of the match, Robert Morris erased a six-point deficit to tie the score at 22-22. The Colonials took the next two points, but the Bobcats refused to give up the last tally. RMU gave one point back on an attack error and then freshman Tierra Allen (Sumter, S.C.) and senior Kelby Carey (Surfside, Calif.) came up with a big block to knot the score up at 24 apiece.
The two teams rallied back and forth, exchanging points until the scoreboard read, 28-28. An error on the home team granted the Colonials their 29th point, followed by the game-winning kill from Erica Robb for the first set triumph. The two teams combined for 34 kills and 115 total attacks in the set.
Robert Morris held Quinnipiac to just 12 points in the second set; however once again QU wouldn't go away. In the third set, the two teams worked themselves into a 22-22 tie score with senior Kayla Lawler (Richmond, Ind.) serving for the Bobcats. Junior Taylor Payne (Warwick, N.Y.) hammered the home team's 23rd point, a Colonial error resulted in their 24th point and Robinson put the game away with her fifth kill of the set for the 25-22 victory.
In the fourth and final set, Robert Morris charged out to an early lead, an advantage that they would never relinquish. The Colonials posted 15 kills and just four errors for a .355 attacking percentage in the frame.
For Quinnipiac, Robinson nearly collected the double-double, adding eight digs to go along with her 11 kills. Payne finished with eight kills on 24 attempts, while Lawler dished out 32 assists. Sophomore Tracy Wright (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and freshman Krista Bennett (Scottsdale, Ariz.) controlled the back row with 29 and 13 digs, respectively.
Next weekend, the Bobcats head back on the road for a pair of NEC matches. Quinnipiac travels New York for a showdown against Long Island University on Saturday, Oct. 22 and St. Francis (N.Y.) on Sunday, Oct. 23.
