Women's Volleyball Claims 3-0 Sweep At St. Francis (N.Y.)
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – Freshman Tierra Allen (Sumter, S.C.) led all Bobcats with 11 kills on Sunday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University women's volleyball team bounced back with a vital 3-0 (27-25, 26-24 and 25-23) win against St. Francis (N.Y.) at the Genovese Center in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. QU surpassed the 40-plus kills mark for the fifth time this season and attacked at a .241 clip, the highest percentage of the campaign.
"I am really proud of the way the team played today," remarked head coach Robin Lamott Sparks. "It's always tough to play in the St. Francis (N.Y.) gym. Brittany Garrett (Ossining, N.Y.) really gave an emotional boost today when we needed it most."
The Bobcats used a potent attack and minimized their errors en route to the team's third conference win of the year. QU totaled 43 kills and just 15 errors, the first time the squad has posted 40-plus kills and less than 16 errors on the season.
Just like in the first meeting of the season, the match featured a close contest in each game. In the first set, the Bobcats battled back from a late deficit to escape with a 27-25 triumph. QU trailed by three points late in the set, but rallied off a 7-2 run to close out the game. Freshman Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) capped off the victory with an ace, as Allen paced the offense with four kills in the stanza.
In the second set of the afternoon, the Bobcats once again needed late-game heroics to come out on top. With the score knotted at 24 apiece, the front line provided the lift that the team needed. Olivia Grattan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Garrett blocked a St. Francis (N.Y.) attack for the 25th point, followed by another block from Grattan and Taylor Payne (Warwick, N.Y.) for the victory.
In the last game of the match, the two teams battled back and forth until the scoreboard read, 23-22, in favor of the visiting Bobcats. Grattan granted QU its 24th point and Robinson put the game away with her third kill of the frame.
Allen collected two digs and two blocks to go along with her 11 kills in the match. Payne added nine kills, Grattan finished with eight and Robinson chimed in with seven. Senior Kayla Lawler (Louisville, Ky.) dished out 39 assists and Tracy Wright (Fair Lawn, N.J.) anchored the back row with 13 digs.
The Bobcats are back in action next weekend with two crucial home games. Quinnipiac welcomes Bryant to Burt Kahn Court on Saturday, October 29th and Central Connecticut State on Sunday. Both contests are scheduled for 2 p.m., with live stats available at www.quinnipiacbobcats.com.
