Women's Volleyball Granted 2011 NEC Team Sportsmanship Award
SOMERSET, N.J. – The Quinnipiac University women's volleyball team was granted the 2011 Northeast Conference Fall Team Sportsmanship Award, announced on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 by the league office. Joining the Bobcats with selections were Monmouth (women's cross country and football), LIU Brooklyn (men's soccer) and Fairleigh Dickinson (women's soccer), St. Francis (NY) men's cross country) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (field hockey).
Instituted by league Presidents in 2008, the awards are designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.
"I know I speak for the entire team when I say that we couldn't be more honored to receive this award," said Head Coach Robin Lamott Sparks. "Being recognized by our peers for the way in which we approach the sport is a great reflection on the core values of our program. Sportsmanship is important not only on the volleyball court, but it carries over into the way our athletes lead their lives. I am very proud to coach such a terrific group of women."
In addition to their gamesmanship on the court, the Bobcats also fared well in the classroom as well. The team posted a cumulative 3.35 grade point average for the fall semester.
On the court, Quinnipiac was led by senior Kayla Lawler (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore Olivia Grattan (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Lawler dished out 734 assists on the season for a 7.90 per set average. She also crossed the 3,000 assist plateau (3,414) for her career, moving into sole possession of first place on the all-time list. Grattan totaled 172 kills and 57 blocks on the front line, ranking first and second, respectively, on the team for the two categories.
