Women's Volleyball Opens in West Point
The Quinnipiac University women's volleyball team opened the 2012 campaign from Aug. 24 - 25 with the West Point Invitational at Gillis Field House in West Point, N.Y. Hosted by Army; the two-day event began on Friday, Aug. 24 and ran through Saturday, Aug. 25. The Bobcats suffered defeats to the Black Knights, Stony Brook, and Indiana and will look to bounce back in a big way at the Akron Invitational.
Scouting The Stags
Fairfield lost three starters from the 2011 team that finished 20-10, 16-2 in the MAAC, and lost to Niagara in the MAAC Tournament Finals to end the season as the runner-up. They do however return three players significant cogs in their starting lineup whom all have had booming success at Fairfield. 2011 MAAC Setter of the Year and All-MAAC Second-Team junior Rachel Romansky returns after compiling an astonishing1227 assists, 23 service aces, 297 digs, 41 blocks, and 96 kills during her sophomore campaign. She is joined by 2011 MAAC Rookie of the Year, All-MAAC Second Team, and MAAC All-Rookie Team honoree in sophomore middle blocker Caitlin Stapleton. She finished last season with 276 kills, a .208 kill percentage, and 75 total blocks in just her first season with the Stags. Finally, senior outside hitter/right side Brianna Dixion completes the trifecta after leading the team with 289 kills last season to go along with a .221 kill percentage, 70 digs, and 26 total blocks. Dixion was the 2009 MAAC Rookie of the Year and has been named to the All-MAAC Second Team since her freshman season. All three have gotten off to fast starts early this season as Stapleton comes into Wednesday's match with team-highs in kills (59) and total blocks (12), Romansky leads in assists (198) and service aces (five), and Dixion has already amassed 45 kills on the year.
After missing the majority of the 2011 campaign with an injury, junior captain libero Logan Riker has already been named to two consecutive All-Tournament Teams for the Bobcats. She was the lone Bobcat named to the West Point Invitational All-Tournament Team after compiling 26 digs and four service aces over three games. And just recently she was named to the Akron Invitational All-Tournament Team where she totaled 18 digs in two games including a standout performance against Montana St. on Aug. 31 where she finished with 14 digs. The 14 digs where her most in a game since a 3-2 loss on Oct. 30, 2010 where she had 24 against LIU Brooklyn and also her most in a three-set game since Oct. 23, 2010 when she finished with 15 in a loss to Central Conn. State.
Bringing the Payne
Senior right side Taylor Payne had her two best games of the 2012 season at the Akron Invitational, completing the two games with 10 kills, eight digs, and three blocks. Her six kills against Montana St. on Aug. 31 were tied with Brittanie Robinson's six against Army for the most kills of any Bobcat player in a game this season.
Freshman Chandler Thornton continues her strong play to start her career as she sits tied atop the Bobcat kills list with Taylor Payne as both have contributed 14 kills through five games.
Quinnipiac hits the road again for their third and final tournament of the year at the Bucknell Invitational. The Bobcats will join Providence, Fordham and the hosting Bison in Pennsylvania for the two-day tournament.
