LEWISBURG, Pa. – Quinnipiac women's volleyball fought hard but ultimately fell to the host Bison, 3-0 (25-16, 26-14, 25-16) on Saturday at the Bucknell Invitational as the Bobcats finished the tournament with a 1-2 record. Sophomore setter Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) had another phenomenal outing with a game-high 23 assists, five kills, and two service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Tanner Celestin (Norco, Calif.) led all players with 12 kills, her second time reaching double figures in the tournament. With the loss the Bobcats fall to 1-8 while Bucknell improves to 6-7.
Robinson did everything she could to keep the Bobcats close in the first set as she factored in 12 of the 16 points (eight assists, two kills, one service ace, and one block) in the set. Freshman outside hitter Chandler Thornton (Arlington, Texas) also put together an impressive first set with three kills and four digs to help lead Quinnipiac. The Bobcats fell behind early in the set and would keep the score within reach at 18-12 in favor of Bucknell. Then three consecutive points induced a Bison timeout before they would again take command and win seven of the last eight points to take the first set, 25-16.
In the second set the Bobcats fought back from an early five point deficit and even took the lead late but eventually fell to the Bison, 26-24. Robinson again played a big role in the second with seven assists, three kills and one service ace while Celestin led all players in the set with seven kills. The teams traded points early before Bucknell claimed a 10-5 lead early. The Bobcats took their first lead in the set with six consecutive points to bring the score to 14-12. The Bison reclaimed the lead and held a share of the advantage until a Taylor Payne kill had the Bobcats out front with a 21-20 lead. Another Celestin kill tied the score at 24 before the Bison took the final two points of the set for a 26-24 victory.
The third set played out much like the first as the Bison finished with a 25-16 victory. Another eight assists in the set from Robinson weren't enough as Bucknell began to seize control early. After the score was deadlocked at five apiece, the Bison won nine of the next 10 points to jump ahead, 14-6. Quinnipiac cut the deficit to five after winning four consecutive points but couldn't overcome the Bison who closed out with the win.
Quinnipiac had several key contributors on Saturday as senior Taylor Payne (Warwick, N.Y.) finished with six digs, five kills, and four blocks. Thornton also had a strong showing as she compiled four kills, eight digs, and three assists.
The Bobcats will next be seen on Saturday Sep. 22 as they enter conference play against Fairleigh Dickinson.
