HACKENSACK, N.J. – Sophomore right side Tanner Celestin (Norco, Calif.) led the Quinnipiac attack with nine kills but the women's volleyball team couldn't hold off the Knights as the Bobcats fell, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-19). The loss drops Quinnipiac to 1-9 and 0-1 in the NEC while Fairleigh Dickinson moves to 5-9 and 1-0 in conference play.
The Bobcat offense started the game off on a hot streak as they had several two-point leads including 3-1, 5-3, 7-5, and 8-6. During the run the ball was spread around as seniors Bonnie Conklin (Plano, Texas) and Taylor Payne (Warwick, N.Y.), freshmen Melissa Dal Pozzo (Reading, Mass.) and Chandler Thornton (Arlington, Texas), and sophomore Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) each had at least one kill in the early going. A pair of Celestin kills kept the Bobcats out front with a 10-9 lead before the Knights took control, claimed 13 of the next 15 points and running away with the first set, 25-14.
The second set belonged to Fairleigh Dickinson and senior outside hitter Meaghan Wheeler. Coming in Saturday's game as the NEC leader with 433 kills, Williams amassed seven in the set alone and 19 for the game. The deficit was as close as three points midway through the set (13-10) before the Knights dominated the remainder with a 25-15 victory. The Bobcat offense was led by Conklin (three kills) and Celestin (two kills) for the set.
In the third, the Bobcats fought back from a pair of early deficits at 3-0 and 6-2 and came all the way back to tie the score at 12-12. Thornton's kill to tie the score forced a Fairleigh Dickinson timeout and then was led by Wheeler who registered kills in three of the next four points and the lead would later balloon to 19-12 in favor of the Knights. The Bobcats cut the deficit to four points at 23-19 with a Celestin kill before the Knights sealed the victory at 25-19.
Celestin added seven digs to go along with her team-leading kill total which now stands at 55 for the season including 36 over her past four games (averaging nine per match). Conklin's six kills were second on the team and her three blocks tied the game-high. Dal Pozzo, Payne, and Thornton each had four kills for the Bobcats and Payne registered two services aces. Robinson led the team in assists with 12 while junior libero Logan Riker (Bowling Green, Ohio) finished with a team-high eight digs.
The Bobcats will next travel up to Brooklyn, N.Y. where they will take on NEC-leader LIU Brooklyn on Sunday at the Wellness Center at 1 p.m.
