Women's Volleyball Defeated by LIU Brooklyn, 3-0, in NEC Action

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac University women's volleyball team was defeated by NEC power LIU Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon at the Wellness Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Blackbirds swept the match in straight sets (25-11, 25-7, 25-16), improving to 14-6 all-time against the Bobcats.

With the loss, Quinnipiac dropped to 1-10 on the season, 0-2 in the Northeast Conference. Still unbeaten in conference play, the Blackbirds remain in first place in the NEC with a 8-7 record, 2-0 in the league.

Sophomore setter Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) did her best to keep Quinnipiac in the game early as she tallied three assists, two blocks, and one kill in the first set alone. But with the score at 9-6 in favor of the Blackbirds, LIU Brooklyn reeled off nine consecutive points and came away with a 25-11 set win.

The key to the second set was four different Blackbirds runs of at least five consecutive points. LIU Brooklyn opened with a 6-0 lead and closed the set on a 5-0 run to win going away at 25-7.

The Bobcats fought in the third set to come away with a victory as they held the lead at 7-6 in the early going. Freshman middle hitter Melissa Dal Pozzo (Reading, Mass.) tied the score at 6-6 with a kill and senior middle hitter Taylor Payne (Warwick, N.Y.) recorded a service ace to give Quinnipiac the lead. Later in the set, Robinson and freshman outside hitter Chandler Thornton (Arlington, Texas) each recorded a kill to tie the score again at 11-11. The Blackbirds then took command of the set, winning 14 of the next 19 points on the way to a 25-16 victory.

Thornton and junior Ashley Kopacki (Hackettstown, N.J.) led the team in kills with three. Robinson added six assists, three digs, two kills, and two blocks. Senior Bonnie Conklin (Plano, Texas) tallied a team-high three blocks while senior Brittany Garrett (Ossining, N.Y.) contributed five digs to lead the Bobcats.

Annika Foit (11 kills), Vera Djuric (31 assists), and Adriana Vinas Joy (18 digs) paced the Blackbirds.

Next weekend, the Bobcats will return home for their home opener in a pair of conference matchups. Quinnipiac welcomes St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday, Sep. 29 and Robert Morris on Sunday, Sep. 30 to Burt Kahn Court. First serve for both contests are scheduled at 1 p.m.
