Live video will be available for the Quinnipiac women's volleyball's Northeast Conference match this weekend. The Bobcats will take on Robert Morris on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Burt Kahn Court on Mount Carmel Campus in Hamden, Conn.
The Bobcats opened NEC play last weekend with a pair of matchups against NEC powers Fairleigh Dickinson and LIU Brooklyn. Quinnipiac was swept in both games, 3-0, as the road warriors couldn't muster enough offense against two dominant NEC teams.
All-Time Against the Field
Despite a 6-14 all-time record against St. Francis (Pa.), the Bobcats have fared well against the Red Flash of late. Quinnipiac has won three of the past five matchups including three straight at home. The Bobcats have never beaten St. Francis (Pa.), going winless in eight matchups in Loretto Pa. Going into their matchup with Robert Morris, the Bobcats have a 1-16 all-time mark against the Colonials. Their only victory came on Oct. 9, 2010 with a 3-1 victory in Hamden.
Scouting the Colonials
LIU Brooklyn enters the weekend with a 5-11 overall record and sits tied atop the NEC leaderboard with a 1-0 record in conference play. The Colonials opened NEC play with a 3-1 (25-11, 18-25, 25-11, 25-18) victory over Bryant. With 14 kills on the match, senior Lindsey Monger became the ninth Colonial in program history to eclipse 1,000 career kills. She also became the second Colonial to ever register 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs for her career. The outside hitter spearheads the Robert Morris attack as she comes in to the weekend with team-highs in kills (199), service aces (19), and digs (175). The focal point of the Colonial offense, Monger will be the main player to watch from Robert Morris. The leader of the Colonial defense is sophomore middle blocker Becky Jay, who is one of only two players in the NEC to average more than one block per game (1.04).
Celestin Surging Up Leaderboard
With a team-high nine kills against Fairleigh Dickinson and 10 total for the weekend, the Bobcat's sophomore right side Tanner Celestin has been on a tear of late, leading the team in kills over the past eight matches with 37, and bringing her team-leading total to 56 for the season.
Double Digits Digs
Junior captain libero Logan Riker tallied nine more digs last weekend for the Bobcats to give her 99 for the season. The outings over the weekend give her 975 for her career as she nears Kelby Care
Celestin and senior Taylor Payne have both factored heavily in the Bobcats' offensive attack recently. Each had gone seven consecutive games recording at least three kills before Sunday's loss to LIU Brooklyn where each recorded one kill. Celestin averaged 7.14 kills per match during that stretch while Payne averaged 5 per match
Victory At Last
Quinnipiac entered the Bucknell Invitational with a 0-6 record heading into their first game of the tournament against Providence. After losing the first set 15-25, the Bobcats stormed back with a 25-20 and 25-21 set victories in the second and third. The Friars tied the score with a 22-25 fourth set win and held a 9-11 lead in the fifth before senior Taylor Payne took over with two kills and two blocks late to help seal a 15-12 victory and clinch the Bobcat's first win of the season.
Three Bobcat players achieved double-doubles in the Bobcat's win over Providence. Sophomore setter Brittanie Robinson recorded 37 assists and 13 digs, freshman outside hitter Chandler Thornton had a team-high 13 kills and 13 digs, and senior middle hitter Taylor Payne's game-winning kill gave her 10 for the game to go along with 11 digs.
Next weekend will feature a pair of local conference rivals as the Bobcats take on Sacred Heart and Central Connecticut State. They matchup against Sacred Heart on Saturday Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. and follow with a road matchup in New Britain against the Blue Devils on Sunday Oct. 7 also at 1 p.m. Fans can find scores, stats and game recaps at the official Athletics Website of Quinnipiac University at www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
