Women's Volleyball Falls to Sacred Heart, 3-0
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Despite a combined 11 total blocks from junior Bonnie Conklin (Plano, Texas) and senior Taylor Payne (Warwick, N.Y.), the Quinnipiac women's volleyball team was defeated by Sacred Heart, 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-16). As a team, Quinnipiac totaled 16 blocks compared to just eight for the Pioneers but the offense couldn't get going as they generated 19 kills in 87 total attempts. The loss drops the Bobcats to 2-22 (1-14 NEC) while Sacred Heart finished the season 10-20 (8-8 NEC).
The first set saw the Bobcats take an early 5-2 lead behind two kills from Conklin. A quick substitution by the Pioneers kick started a 23-6 run that lifted Sacred Heart to the easy first set victory. Sophomore setter Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) had a solid first set, producing two assists, one kills, and one service ace.
The Bobcats showed some resolve in the second set as they trailed 5-1 in the early going. Sophomore Tierra Allen (Sumter, S.C.) and freshman Chandler Thornton (Arlington, Texas) helped claw away at the lead with a kill each to bring the deficit back to two points. The Pioneers continued to apply the pressure, building a 11-6 advantage before the Bobcat defense began to impose their will with a combination block by Payne and Conklin and a service ace from Allen to make it a 15-14 game. The lead was as close as 21-19 late with Thornton getting involved in the offense with three of her five kills in the second, but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers claimed the victory, 25-21.
In the third and final set, the Bobcats again let up an early lead but couldn't manage to pull themselves back in it, closing out with a 25-16 loss. The Pioneer lead ballooned to 11-4 early and the Bobcats would close the gap to as few as five points at 15-10. Allen tallied two of her five kills in the final stanza before Sacred Heart closed out the victory.
Thornton and Allen each tied for the team-lead with five kills apiece. Conklin had four kills to go along with her six total blocks. Junior libero Logan Riker (Bowling Green, Ohio) registered eight digs in the victory while Robinson finished with 14 assists, five digs, two kills, and one service ace.
The Bobcats will conclude their regular season with Senior Day tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in the Burt Kahn Court against Central Connecticut State.
