HAMDEN, Conn. – On Senior Day from Burt Kahn Court, the Quinnipiac women's volleyball team wrapped up the 2012 season with a, 3-0, loss to Central Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats say goodbye to seniors Taylor Payne (Warwick, N.Y.), Ashley Kopacki (Hackettstown, N.J.), and Brittany Garrett (Ossining, N.Y.) who each had their moments throughout the match. Quinnipiac finishes 2012 with a 2-23 (1-15 NEC) record while the Blue Devils improve to 17-12 (12-4 NEC) and will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming NEC Semifinals.
Payne kickstarted the Bobcat offense as she put down the first point of the match with a kill to electrify the great crowd on-hand at Burt Kahn Court. Sophomore Tierra Allen (Sumter, S.C.) involved herself in the offense with back-to-back kills while freshman Melissa Dal Pozzo (Reading, Mass.) recorded a service ace to give Quinnipiac a 7-6 lead. They continued to hang in with the NEC's third-place Blue Devils on the backs of junior Bonnie Conklin (Plano, Texas) who recorded three straight points for Quinnipiac to keep the deficit at four points. Junior libero Logan Riker (Bowling Green, Ohio) highlighted the set with a kill that had the Bobcat fans on their feet but it wasn't enough to overcome Central Connecticut as they finished with a 25-18 opening set victory. Sophomore setter Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) moved the ball around well from the middle, recording 11 of her 22 assists on the afternoon in the opening set.
The second set was dominated by the Blue Devils as they had three seperate runs of at least four straight points to take a commanding lead. Allen began the set with a kill for the only Bobcat lead in the stanza but their offense couldn't get going against the blocks up front for the Blue Devils. Central Connecticut ended up on top, 25-11.
The third set featured Kopacki as the senior recorded her two kills on the match late in the third and was set by a thunderous response from the Quinnipiac faithful. Dal Pozzo closed out a 3-0 run for the Bobcats to close the gap to 18-13 with a service ace but the Blue Devils closed out with a 7-1 run to take the match with a third set victory, 25-14.
Freshman Chandler Thornton (Arlington, Texas) and Conklin each finished with six kills to lead the way for the Bobcats. Conklin also finished with four blocks to lead the defensive effort in the middle. Riker and Kopacki each finished with seven digs to lead the team while Dal Pozzo had three service aces to go along with three kills.
