SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Quinnipiac women's volleyball team fell to Texas St., 3-0, and Lamar 3-1, in their final day at the Delta Zeta Texas St. Classic on Saturday from Oscar Strahan Coliseum. Senior libero Logan Riker (Bowling Green, Ohio) amassed 22 total digs on the afternoon to eclipse 1,100 for her career. The Bobcats now drop to 0-4 on the season while the host Texas St. remains undefeated at 3-0 while Lamar moved to 1-3.
Riker, already the program's all-time career digs leader, posted back-to-back double digit dig outings with 12 against Texas St. and 10 in the match with Lamar. Freshman setter Emma Ogden (Crown Point, Ind.) continued to impress in just her first weekend as the team's main distributor. She racked up 21 assists, eight digs and two blocks in three sets versus Texas St. and followed with 28 assists, eight digs and two kills in the nightcap with Lamar. Sophomore outside hitter Chandler Thornton (Arlington, Texas) led the team with 15 kills through the two matches.
The host Texas St. Bobcats took on Quinnipiac first and came away victorious, 25-11, 25, 10, and 25-22. Junior Tanner Celestin (Norco, Calif.) totaled three kills in the first set to keep her team within reach but a 14-3 Texas St. run was too much to overcome. In the second set, it was an 8-0 start for the host Bobcats that put the set out of reach for Quinnipiac.
Trailing by two sets, Quinnipiac showed some fight and determination in the third as they built up a lead and maintained the advantage for the majority of the deciding set. Freshman outside hitter Jamie Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.) paced the Bobcat attack in the early going as she combined with Ogden for the first two kills of the set. After a Thornton kill, Leigh was next to combine with Ogden for two more kills to put the Bobcats up 6-3. The third set was the most productive for the Bobcats yet this season as they accumulated a season-high 14 kills in the set.
The Quinnipiac lead would grow to as much as 13-9 after a Thornton kill but Texas St. would close the gap and even tied the score at 16-16. Junior outside hitter Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) then got in on the action with a kill to give Quinnipiac the lead and then with the score tied once again at 21-21, she pounded a service ace to give her team the lead late. Texas St. then took command as they took advantage of a pair of Quinnipiac errors to seize the final set, 25-22.
Numerous season-firsts occurred in the final match against Lamar starting with the first set victory for the Bobcats this year. The team also went for 33 kills, a season-best, and another season-high with 40 digs as a team. Despite the impressive totals, the Big Red took down the Bobcats, 3-1 (25-21, 26-28, 25-15, 25-14).
The first set was within reach as late as 15-15, with Ogden distributing the ball well to Leigh, Thornton and Paolucci, who all recorded at least two kills in the opening set but Lamar picked up some key points at the end to secure the set win.
The second set belonged to Leigh and the Bobcats who claimed the 28-26 set win. Leigh went for four kills and one block to lead the way as she inspired a come-from-behind victory. Trailing 15-10 to the Big Red, the Bobcats came all the way back to tie the score at 21-21 on an emphatic block from Leigh and Paolucci. Facing a set point at 24-23, the Bobcats took advantage of some Lamar errors and claimed a crucial point off a Thornton kill to help claim the victory.
Lamar proved too much for the Bobcats in the final two sets as they claimed 25-15 and 25-14 victories to walk away victorious.
The Bobcats will regroup and come back on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. where they will take on the Providence Friars for their 2013 home opener.
