- Box Score @ Siena
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Senior middle hitter Bonnie Conklin (Plano, Texas) put up a career high 10 blocks (three solo, seven assist) but the Quinnipiac women's volleyball team wasn't able to get by Siena, falling on Saturday, 3-1. The Bobcats put a scare in the MAAC's first place Siena Saints as they claimed a tightly-contested third set and blocked a total of 15 shots, their second-highest total as a team all season. Quinnipiac's loss moves them to 4-17 (2-7 MAAC) while the Saints keep hold of their first place spot improving to 10-10 (9-1 MAAC).
Conklin added four kills and two service aces to her career high block total to round out a sensation game against the Saints. Freshman right side Jamie Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.) narrowly missed a double double as she put up nine kills, a career high eight blocks, four digs and a service ace. Fellow classmate freshman setter Emma Ogden (Crown Point, Ind.) finished with her team-leading fourth double double of the year with 21 assists and 11 digs. Senior Logan Riker (Bowling Green, Ohio) added 15 digs for her sixth double digit dig outing in her past seven games.
Siena jumped out to an early lead as they controlled the tempo of the set, ultimately winning 25-13. The Saints forced the Bobcats into 12 attack errors and two return errors in the frame which proved to be the difference in the first set.
After Siena claimed another set victory, 25-15, in the second as they benefited greatly from 14 kills in the set alone. The Bobcats meanwhile mustered only three kills through the second stanza as they fell behind as much as eight points in the early going and couldn't gain enough traction to get back in the set towards the later stages.
Much like their first meeting wherein the Saints controlled play in the first two sets, the Bobcats came roaring back in the third with a nail-biting 25-23 victory. As a team, Quinnipiac continued their struggle on the offensive end with six kills compared to seven errors but their defensive blockers accounted for nearly a third of the team's points in the set. Paolucci and Conklin each went for four blocks in the third set alone. Quinnipiac's lead ballooned to as much as 18-12 in the stanza but the Saints stormed back to tie the score at 20-20 and again at 23-23. This time it was the Bobcats who pulled out some late set magic as they earned two straight points to take the victory.
Quinnipiac's offense rounded into form in the fourth set as they compiled 14 of their 30 total kills in the frame. Paolucci tallied six kills while freshman outside hitter Katie Urycki (Chesterton, Ind.) added four in the fourth alone. The Saints appeared ready to take control and run away with the set victory as they led 18-14 but the Bobcats once again stormed back, winning eight of the next 10 points. Urycki started the run with a pair of kills and capped the run with another but the Saints were able to regroup and reel off four straight points to take the fourth set and match, 26-24.
The Bobcats will need to regroup quickly and bounce back as they take on MAAC's third place team Marist on the road, Sunday at 1:00 pm.
