- Box Score vs. Iona
HAMDEN, Conn. – Freshman outside hitter Katie Urycki (Chesterton, Ind.) went to work with her most kills in a match in nearly a month but it wasn't enough to carry Quinnipiac women's volleyball past Iona as the Bobcats fell, 3-0. Urycki racked up nine kills on the afternoon from Burt Kahn Court but the Gaels' offensive attack was too much to overcome in the defeat. Quinnipiac moves to 5-23 (3-12 MAAC) on the season while Iona picks up a key win to stay in the playoff race at 13-13 (11-5 MAAC).
The sensational outing for Urycki on Saturday was her highest kill output since she tallied 10 on Oct. 12 against Niagara and equal her entire kill total from the previous three games combined. She also added two blocks, three digs and one ace to round out one of her better games through her rookie season.
Junior Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) went for her second straight double double (18 assists, 10 digs) to give her three for the season, second-most on the team. Freshman Cody Michaels (Versailles, Ky.) notched 10 digs in her first career start at the libero position to go along with four assists while her classmate Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska) added five kills and two blocks against Iona. Sophomore Chandler Thornton (Arlington, Texas) was another key cog for the Bobcats as she went for four kills, two service aces and 11 digs. This marks Thornton's second straight game with double digits in digs which is a career first for the second year outside hitter out of the Lone Star State.
Quinnipiac had to fight off a viscous Iona offensive attack early as the Gaels slugged their way to 16 kills, six of which coming off the stroke of the MAAC's leader in kills this season Catrina Warren. Thornton did her best to keep the Bobcats close as she notched seven of her 11 digs in the first set as well as two of her four kills but it wasn't enough to overcome a 15-6 run for Iona to start the set. The Bobcats evened out their play late but ended up on the wrong end of a 25-13 opening set.
The Bobcats flipped the script on the Gaels through the early to middle stage of the second set as Iona jumped out to an early 7-2 lead but the Bobcats stormed back to trail by only two points at 14-12. Robinson did a great job facilitating the ball from her setter position as four different Bobcats notched a kill in their run to get back in the game. Despite the strong play and momentum favoring the Bobcats, Iona found their rhythm and reeled off 11 of the next 14 points to away with a 25-15 victory.
The home team was every bit the equal of the Gaels for the majority of the third set as Iona threatened to run away with the stanza early but Quinnipiac never allowed their lead to increase beyond four points. Urycki took over in the third set for the Bobcats with five of her nine kills in the frame and Michaels added six of her 10 digs to keep her team in it but Iona's Shannon Ward (eight kills) was too much to overcome in the end as Iona claimed the victory, 25-17.
Quinnipiac will conclude their 2013 regular season home slate with a match against Manhattan tomorrow at 1:00 pm. Senior Day festivities for Logan Riker (Bowling Green, Ohio) and Bonnie Conklin (Plano, Texas) will commence before the start of play.
