Women's Cross Country Season Preview
In preparation for the upcoming 2012 season, the Bobcats women's cross country team will look to add another title to their already unprecedented streak. Quinnipiac has won the NEC Championship every year since 2005, an NEC record, and with several key contributors to last season's squad returning, the Bobcats have been chosen as the preseason favorites by the NEC coaches. Not only have the Bobcats won a record seven straight NEC Championships, they have done so in dominating fashion. Since splitting the Championship with Sacred Heart in 2005, the Bobcats have beaten the runner-up team by an average of 33.5 points in that six-year stretch. Quinnipiac has also fielded the most individual champions with six and only twice in their seven-year reign has the NEC individual champion come from another school.
Head coach Carolyn Martin and her assistant Chris Dickerson enter their fourth season after being named the Women's Coaching Staffs of the Year by the NEC in 2011, their third such honor in three years leading the Bobcats. The Bobcats finished the 2011 season with a stellar performance in the NEC Championship, placing four runners on the All-Conference team led by returning senior Morgan Roche. Her 5th place finish with 19:02.7 in the NEC Championship set the tone for the day as the Bobcats placed all 10 runners within the top-38 finishers. Her consistence also showed throughout the season as she placed second or better among all Bobcat runners in the five races she competed in last season. Roche leads an impressive core that will be returning for another season including the other three 2011 All-Conference performers in senior Andrea Szarkowicz, and juniors Brianna and Amanda Faust. Szarkowicz came on late last season, finishing no worse than second on the team in her last three races of the season, including a 109th place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regionals which as tops among all Quinnipiac runners. Brianna's top performance of 2011 came in the Fordham University Invitational where she came across the finish line in 18th place overall and her sister, Amanda, made the All-Conference team with an 11th place finish in the 2011 NEC Championship. Also returning is 2010 NEC Outstanding Performer senior Becca White who still holds the league record with a finishing time of 17:17.1 at the 2010 NEC Championship in New Britain, Conn. The third Faust sister, Christina, finished just behind her siblings in 27th place at last years' NEC Championship and junior Jessica Soja also returns after just missing an All-Conference nod, finishing in 15th.
The 2012 squad will seek leadership from returning seniors Hannah Donadio, Kaitlynn Hammerton, Jill Humphreys, and Rachel Morelli. Several other contributors include juniors Valerie Zielinski, Kelly Malloy, and Courtney Armstrong. In addition, the Bobcats bring in seven freshmen Rebecca Morse, Medinah Nabadduka, Kristina Kethchum, Chelsea Savage, Ashley Carle, Abby Waight, and Tracy Campbell.
The 2012 season will kick off at the Stony Brook Invitational on Sep. 1, followed by Bryant Invitational on Sep. 8 in Smithfield, R.I., the host site for the 2012 NEC Championship. The Bobcats then host the Quinnipiac Invitational on Sep. 15 and close out September with the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational on the 28th. The team will next travel to the New England Championships on Oct. 7, followed by the Princeton University Invitational on Oct. 13 before the NEC Championship at Bryant on Oct. 27. The NCAA Northeast Regionals and NCAA Championships will take place on Nov. 10 and Nov. 19 repectively.
