HAMDEN, Conn. – Freshman women's cross country runner Ashley Carle (Jackson, N.J.) claimed the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week honor as announced by the league office on Wednesday Sep. 5. Quinnipiac are coming off a third place finish at the Stony Brook Invitational on Saturday Sep. 8, led by Carle's overall ninth place finish.
"We are very excited about the addition of Ashley to our team this year and in the coming seasons," Quinnipiac cross country head coach Carolyn Martin said. "Ashley has a great personality, is a very tough racer, and will undoubtedly help us continue to improve moving forward."
Making her collegiate debut on Saturday, Carle joins the Bobcats after a stellar career at Jackson Memorial High School where she won Most Valuable Player awards in all three sports she participated (cross country, indoor and outdoor track) during her senior season. She kicked off her career finishing the 4k event in 15:24.58, the top finisher for Quinnipiac, second best NEC competitor, and third fastest freshman at the Stony Brook Invitational. Carle's team-leading ninth-place finish was the first time a freshman runner finished as the Bobcat's fastest in a race since Becca White placed first at the 2009 Quinnipiac Invitational.
The women's cross country team returns to action on Saturday Sep. 8 when they travel to Smithfield, R.I., site of the 2012 NEC Championship, to compete in the Bryant Invitational. The men's 8k event starts at 10:00 a.m. and the women's 5k meet begins at 10:45 a.m.
