SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior Becca White (Natick, Mass.) excelled on Saturday, finishing third overall, and led the Quinnipiac women's cross country team to a third place team finish at the Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Race hosted by Bryant University. The Bobcats finished the 5k event with all seven runners placing within the top-48 out of 183 total competitors for a team total of 108 points, behind only Harvard (28) and Boston College (104).
"Everyone ran well today and we are so proud of our team finish," Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin said. "We need to work on packing up better and being able to run together, but for us to finish where we did today as a team shows how hard to girls worked and they will give it their all each time out."
In a preview of the host site for the 2012 Northeast Conference Championship, Quinnipiac placed third out of 17 teams at the event and first among the nine NEC teams who competed at Bryant on Saturday. The Bobcat's average time of 18:52.8 was nearly 20 seconds faster than the next-closest NEC competitor, Sacred Heart, who came in fifth overall.
White crossed the finish line with a time of 18:08.2 in her first race of the 2012 season. The third place finish was her highest result in a meet since the 2011 Stony Brook Invitational where she also placed third. White was supported by junior Jessica Soja (Simsbury, Conn.), who ran the event in 13th overall, and finished a career-best second on the team. Soja had a breakout performance with a 18:49.9 finishing time, which was her second-fastest timed 5k finish of her career behind the 2010 NEC Championship where she had 18:34.4.
Reigning NEC Rookie of the Week Ashley Carle (Jackson, N.J.) backed up her ninth place finish at the Stony Brook Invitational, finishing in 27th place on Saturday. She completed the event in 19:05.9 and was third-best for the Bobcats. Junior Amanda Faust (Macungie, Pa.) and freshman Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, N.J.) rounded out the top-five for Quinnipiac with 32nd and 33rd overall finishes on Saturday. Both raced in their first events of the season and finished a second apart with 19:09.4 and 19:10.4, respectively.
Two more Bobcat runners, junior Brianna Faust (Macungie, Pa.) and freshman Medinah Nabadduka (Windsor, Conn.) finished with 19:34.2 and 19:39.7 respectively to complete the Bobcat's top-seven runners on Saturday.
The race was held in memory of Shawn Nassaney, a former member of the Bryant cross country and track teams that passed away during the attacks on September 11, 2001, and is coordinated by the Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Foundation.
Quinnipiac hosts their next event, the Quinnipiac Invitational on Saturday Sep. 15 with the women beginning at 10 a.m. followed by the men's event at 10:45 a.m.
