EDISON, N.J. – The captivating run Quinnipiac women's cross country freshman Niamh Ashe (East Islip, N.Y.) is on continues to impress as she earned MAAC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week honors, as announced by the league office on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Ashe has been a tireless competi tor all season and was recognized for her first career weekly award after another sensation outing on Saturday.
The Bobcats continue to surge forward into their championship season as they finished an impressive 6th overall out of 43 teams in the New England Cross Country Championships. Racing from Franklin Park in downtown Boston, the Bobcats' freshman Ashe posted an 11th place finish out of 283 competitors to land a spot on the All-New England team. Ashe makes it four straight events in which she has place first among the Bobcat contingent. Her finishing time of 17:49 represented the second-fastest time among all freshmen competitors. She set a strong pace at 5:43 per mile throughout the competition and heads into the MAAC Championship three weekends from now with an All-New England distinction, placing 11th overall.
Ashe combined with Quinnipiac men's cross country sophomore Brendan Copley (Colchester, Vt.) who took home the men's weekly award to earn the Bobcats their first ever sweep of the MAAC weekly awards. They become just the second team to the sweep both the men's and women's awards as Iona accomplished the feat earlier this season on Sept. 24. Ashe also joins fellow teammates Jess Soja (Simsbury, Conn.), who won the MAAC Runner of the Week back on Sept. 10, to give Quinnipiac the most individual winners (two) of any other team in the conference.
The Bobcats hope to continue their hot streak at the CCSU Mini Meet on Friday, Oct. 25 before taking part in the MAAC Championships on Friday, Nov. 1 from Van Cortlandt Park.
