HAMDEN, Conn. – Former Duke University lacrosse-commit Sam Oltmans spoke at Quinnipiac on Tuesday evening in Burt Kahn Court. Oltmans addressed a crowd of student-athletes, Quinnipiac students and faculty, talking about how his decision to both drive under the influence and text while operating a motor vehicle changed his life.
The event – which was hosted by the Quinnipiac Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and the Quinnipiac New York Times Rep – aimed at raising awareness for the damage both drinking and driving and texting while driving can cause in somebody's life. Oltmans spoke to the crowd for half an hour, then took questions from the audience for another 30 minutes.
"My message to you: be responsible," Oltmans said to the crowd. "Don't drink and drive, don't text and drive. You can have fun when you're in college, but you've got to be smart. Don't make the same mistakes that I did. They'll stay with you for the rest of your life."
Following questions, student athletes shuttled up to the York Hill campus to watch women's basketball take on No. 22 Michigan State.
