16th Annual Heroes Hat

16th Annual Heroes Hat

Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017

The 16th Anniversary of the Heroes Hat Game is set for Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017 when Quinnipiac hosts Yale at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center at 7 p.m., available live on ESPN3.

This year's game will mark the 12th time the Bobcats and Bulldogs battle for the award with Quinnipiac winning seven of the previous nine Heroes Hats, which included four ties. The Heroes Hat is presented to the winner of the last regular-season game on Quinnipiac's home ice, with the game at Yale's Ingalls Rink serving as the tie-breaker. In the event of a tie in both games, the winner of the previous year retains the Heroes Hat.

The award was established in honor of those who risked or lost their lives following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. It remembers Joseph Mascali (FDNY/Staten Island 5), father of Quinnipiac alumni Chris and Jenn Mascali.

The "Heroes Hat" will be presented to the winning team by Mrs. Lori Mascali and her daughter Katie, who lost their husband and father, Joseph, while he was attempting to save lives on September 11. Joseph was also the father of Quinnipiac freshman golfer, Chris Mascali '05, Jennifer Mascali '02 and current graduate Katie Mascali '14.

The UConn Hockey Family also was touched personally in the wake of the September 11 terrorists' attacks. Former Husky letterwinner Matt Jarret's (1996-2000) older sister Amy, 28, was a member of the United Flight Crew 175 that struck the second tower of the World Trade Center.

The Heroes Hat, created by Quinnipiac Director of Athletics & Recreation Jack McDonald, was originally presented to the winner of the Quinnipiac and UConn season series during its first four years from 2001-02 to 2004-05. The award was not presented during the 2005-06 season after Quinnipiac moved from Atlantic Hockey to ECAC Hockey. The Heroes Hat was revived the following year after bringing together new ECAC Hockey rivals, Quinnipiac and Yale.

At the time of the award's inception, Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold said, "It is our hope that the Heroes Hat be a Connecticut sports tribute to the many heroes and their families involved in the September 11th tragedy."

Following the game, members of the Mascali family will be on hand to present the award to the winning team.
